Burkina Faso contests Covid-19 results hours to AFCON kick-off
New positive Covid-19 cases have hit Burkina Faso within 24 hours of their crunch inaugural match with hosts Cameroon on Sunday 9 January. The team has strongly contested the results implicating key players, with captain Bertrand Traoré describing it “scandalous”.
At a press conference in Olembe on Saturday, coach Kamou Malo and his captain withheld the names of players whose results returned positive.
“The Covid tests carried out at home with 5 positive cases did not respect the protocol established by Caf,” Traoré told reporters attending pre-match conference in Olembe, Yaounde.
The Confederation “wants us to do PCR tests 48 hours before the match and not anti-hygienic tests as was done.”
“These anti-hygienic tests were done late Friday night between 10 pm and 11 pm after the passage of a first medical team not recognized by Caf.” Bertrand Traoré.
The team lodging in Yaounde had been complete with the arrival of Issoufou Dayo, Dramane and Kilian Nikiema. The three were being quarantined in Abu Dhabi after testing positive to Covid-19 prior to departure.
The Aston Villa striker however maintains the Stallions are in high spirits ahead of tomorrow’s opener.
“We have a young team that has proven during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers that they deserve respect. We expect to translate this mindset tomorrow on the pitch,” Bertrand Traoré.
