Boureima Hassane Bande’s 39th minute goal helped Burkina Faso grab all three points in the second match of matchday two in group A, Olembe stadium Yaounde.

Coach Kamou Malo’s team started on high gear. Gustavo Sangare’s unimaginable miss five minutes into the half and Edmond Tapsoba’s freekick punched out by Marcio Da Rosa.

The attempts yielded fruits when the ball came off midfielder Boureima Hassane’s chest into the net.

It was the perfect way for Boureima to introduce himself after he was unused during their 1-2 loss to Cameroon last Sunday.

Cape Verde put up a brave performance but lacked something to write home about.

With both teams winning two each of four previous competitive meetings, the victory means Burkina Faso now has an edge over Cape Verde.

The Stallons and the Blue Sharks are tied to three points each and will be obliged to win their last group games for a spot in the round of 16.

Burkina were without marksman Bertrand Traoré. The Aston Villa striker – who worked out their consolatory goal against Cameroon by Gustavo Sangare – is one of four players who missed Thursday night’s game after testing positive for Covid-19.

Group A will round off group stage on Monday 17 January 2022 with Cape Verde to lock horns with Cameroon while Burkina Faso clash with Ethiopia.

Burkina Faso’s best record remains reaching the final in 2013. Cape Verde’s best run in the competition was also in 2013 in South Africa when they reached the quarter-final.
